Counting – Step 6

  • Where are they now?

Counts forwards in place-value parts (tens and ones), starting from any number, in range to 99

  • Where to next?

Counts forwards and backwards in place-value parts (hundreds, tens and ones) in the range to 999 and then in the range to 9999

  • Purpose

Purpose: Counting is a complex activity which involves three main understandings; that numbers are named in a fixed sequence, that one number is counted per object and that the last number counted names the count. This sequence moves students from simply memorising a sequence of numbers, through understanding that counting is about ‘how many’, visualising and using numbers mentally and building place value understanding to count more efficiently as well as understand the composition of very large numbers.

Activities and Assessments (designed to move students from step 6 to step 7/8)

Flip and Spin – Hundreds

Focus: Counting backwards and forwards by the place value units hundreds, tens and ones from numbers in the range to 999 helps to consolidate an understanding of the way our number system works. In a practical sense, it also lays the foundations for building and understanding efficient adding and subtracting strategies for two and three digit numbers.

Number Hunt – Hundreds

Focus: Counting backwards and forwards by the place value units (hundreds, tens and ones) from numbers in the range to 999 helps to consolidate an understanding of the way our number system works. In a practical sense, it also lays the foundations for building, and understanding, efficient adding and subtracting strategies for two and three digit numbers.

Count 9999

Focus: Counting forwards and backwards in the range to 9999 presents some extra challenges and will test, as well as help consolidate, students’ understanding of the number system. Confusion and teaching points can often arise when students have to cross place value boundries in 4-digit numbers, such as counting on from 2009, 2099 or 2999; or even from numbers like 2010 and 2100.
